If you grew up in Manila, then it’s impossible that you wont know what Sarsi is.  Who can forget this unique tasting softdrink.  Better than Coke, better than Pepsi, great with any confection from the small time bakery.

Pinoys are a religous race.  We pray, and pray and pray.  We have billboards that openly talk about God and 3′o clock prayer shows.  Churches are jam packed during sundays, and churches are with people come weekdays.  But what i love about the typical Filipino family is that deep down inside there is always a part of them that believes that God is real and he is somewhere out there.  Many times have i seen a family who is at the point of crisis mention that they need to ask God for help. 

Families believing in God, being open to religous beliefs, and respecting other cultures…a good attitude for a Third world country.

Filipino’s Love to Laugh!

An expert defined this as a defense mechanism, that Filipino’s laugh so that we may cope with the depressing environment that we live in:

Laughter as a national survival kit is perhaps more applied in the Philippines than anywhere else. This national psychology is easily shaped by our sad collective experience with oppression — from past colonizers and the neo-colonizers, the oligarchs, who now rule our land. – William M. Of course this may be factual and true, but i believe that Filipinos laugh simply because  we have the God given concept of fun.  We are a fun nation and we enjoy funny things.   We laugh at slapstick comedy, we laugh at text jokes, we laugh at problems, we laugh at cats, dogs, chicken’s, etc.etc.  We love humor shows, and we see the lighter side of  every bad situation.  It’s not because we need laughter to survive, its because we choose to be happy, even if things suck.

I’d rather be in a Nation that laughs than a Nation that’s always depressed.

My aunt from the states and i were chatting one  afternoon and she asked me how my Dad was.  I then opted to mention that as usual, my father gets into my business and forgets that im past the age of puberty already.  I told my aunt that my Dad simply did not understand the concept of ”letting go” and that i have my own life now.  My Aunt gave a laugh via chat (lol, haha, heh, hehe) and mentioned that i should be thankful and that i’m blessed…kids in their neighborhood got kicked out of their houses by the time they turn 18. 

I thought about this idea for a while, and realized that children in the Pinas remain kids forever.  No matter how old you are, the close family ties that our culture has always retains the idea that kids, will always be kids.  If we need help, a shoulder to cry on, or even financial assistance (if our parents are uber rich) then we can always run to mom or dad.  And no matter what, our parents will always love and worry about us.
